Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have an 86 cj7 with a 4.2 six. I have a random sound( sounds like a relay click) from around the ECM behind the glovebox.; As soon as it clicks the engine stops momentarily, then starts again. It is getting worse. Is it the ECM or a wiring issue?

The ECM is solid state, no relays are inside it. I don't know what could be causing the sound.

The ECU can be bypassed by performing the "Nutter Bypass" which eliminates the ECU from the ignition system. You can do just the timing control part of it, or disconnect the stepper motor in the carb for full ECU disablement.

Here's a link to a wiring diagram showing the change:

Here's a link to a different forum with 15 pages of posts and comments:

Note: this mod is not "Smog Legal" and is for trail vehicles only!

John Nutter first posted his article about the "Nutter Bypass" on 4x4Wire.com in 1999.

Enter Nutter Bypass in the search block at the top of the forum page and it will bring up more links from 4x4Wire archives about the bypass.
