Hi. Thanks for your posting on my tach question. I ordered a stock Pajero diesel tach/speedo from eBay UK. Same thing as in my Raider, so I should be able to swap it out with no problem.

As for posting photos, use Photobucket. Once you've uploaded photos there all you do is copy the IMG code for the picture you want and paste the code into your dialog box on 4X4 Wire. When you view your posting the photos will magically appear.

Just finished wiring everything up on my 4D56T. The engine came with glow plugs already installed, so I presume they're the right ones. Haven't even thought about timing the injector pump yet. Will have to see my local guru about that one. But I appreciate your reminding me about this.

All the best!

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I hadn't thought of getting a stock tach - great idea!

I got my engine used from ebay. The timing belts are supposed to be replaced every 5 years/50,000 miles or something like that. My engine is probably 15-20 years old so I changed them. It seems the injection pump is supposed to be timed after changing the belts. It looks pretty simple with the factory tool which I don't have. I think I can make a dial indicator adapter that will work.

My engine came with glow plugs but I think they are worn out. It is very smoky until it is completely warmed up. Either that or I have a more serious problem. The engine oil breather blows a fair amount of vapor under boost, which may mean ring blowby. I will do a compression test when I change the glow plugs.

This is the injector pump.

Which company did you get your 4D56's from?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I got my engine with transmission and transfer case from Soshin Trade Group or Soshin USA. I found it with a "Mitsubishi diesel" ebay search. It's funny, they have two different web pages, slightly different names, but the same address:

http://www.stcengines.com/
http://www.soshinusa.com/default2.asp

They were good to deal with. They seemed knowledgeable. I paid with PayPal and had the engine about four days later.

The engine seems a little beat up. The oil pan and some other steel parts were rusty. The aluminum parts had white fuzzy stuff. The timing cover had a broken tab. The coolant passages were full of brown sludge. The engine oil was very dark, but you expect that in a diesel. I am hoping the rings and the valves are good. I'll know when I do a compression test.

I wonder what the engine came out of. I wonder what the PTO was used for. It may have run a hydraulic pump or a winch.

I got my engine on eBay as well. From a guy clearing out a warehouse of them in the UK. It was a brand new long block, which meant that it had all the "core" stuff, but I had to separately buy a lot of the accessories like power steering pump, alternator, even the pulleys and fan, not to mention the belts. I've got everything in place now and the engine is in the Raider, sitting pretty.

Just an FYI, you can use your stock gas tach if you use a Dakota Digital DSL-1. These are very easy to install and makes your stock tach work like factory with a diesel motor.
