I'm heavily considering the installation of an AFR gauge for the 3.0.

So heres what I want to know. My goal is to tune the mixture on a new VAFM so its within spec. Can I reasonably run a short band or do I need to go to wideband? I'm not looking at getting too crazy wtih this.

Whats a good setup?

If you want it accurate - wideband.
If you want to make it as close to 14.7:1 as you can, go narrowband. Wont help you if you're trying to tune closed loop.

Look for an AEM UEGO wideband... usually can find for $150 bux... or check the classifieds on customtacos.com or yotatech for a good used wideband...

Yes, you will need a wideband A/F if you are going to use the meter to tune the engine. The non-wideband type cycle between lean and rich when at idle or when cruising, peg at rich when at heavy/full throttle, and work better as fuel economy monitor than a tuning one.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
