Buy new glow plugs! When they are totally shot they will not send the resistance signal back to the glow controller . This will prevent clicks clunks etc from relays. By the way the controllers can be rebuilt like any other auto ecu. If you live in a real cold area I would highly suggest maintaining the original system.

Thanks, Mike. I have decided to buy new plugs, but am unsure of which brand to pursue. Sellers on eBayUK offer numerous mfrs like NGK, Bosch, Denso, HKT etc. There's also the dieselglowplugs (DGP) website, who I think are the same as Italian E-tecno-1. Their "equivalent" plug for the 4D55 is listed as a dual-coil type (like Bosch Duoterm?), said to provide a sort of self-regulating function. I wonder how true this is, or if it's just a lot of hooey.
Do you (or anyone else out there) have a personal favorite brand?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Don't buy overseas! they must be correct for your year and most of the overseas people get them wrong everytime! they look the same but the resistance is different. I buy NGK's. I get mine from the dealer for like $20 ea
