Need a Spot
Hello. I have an 87 raider. The rear driver axle nut came loose and axle shaft came out. Got that side fixed and am having problems torquing the nut. I have no way to tell the actual torque. So upon taking passenger side shaft out to replace bearing I realized I could not get the axle nut loose. The manual calls for a spanner wrench but have not been able to find one. Finally put it back together and dropped it off at dealership to let them try. They removed the nut, but now say that the bearing is stuck. It is tapered. Can someone explain how this tapered bearing is seized on the shaft?

The taper refers to how the bearing surface is canted, as opposed to a ball bearing. The press-fit inner race will need to be heated and pressed off, or cut off with a grinder. I've pressed off many axle bearings and the stuck ones were unpleasant / dangerous with a press load on them.

If you end up needing a shaft, I have one out and protected from the weather.

It's a fairly std machine shop task to press/cut off the old bearing race or bearing retainer and press on a new one. Don't skimp on quality, and do a new seal.

Got it back, turned out they don't have the spanner wrench either. mechanic told me he just tightened the axle nut with channel locks. Has anyone had issues with the axle nut spinning loose. The lock washer is on there, a bit nervous about it flying out running up the highway.
