Getting the Wheeling Fever
1997 Montero with 3.5L motor, 189,000 miles.

Is it worth it to replace the stem seals and valve cover gaskets with mileage this high? Everything else is in good working order but driving in traffic is a bit shocking, especially for those right behind me. Quite the smoke show upon acceleration.

If I do this, what else should I knock out at the same time?

Thanks,
Mark

Used to have the same problem and (knock on wood) when I switched to 5w30 (basic chevron dino lube I buy at Costco) I don't get nearly as much smoke in the same traffic as I used to with 10w30 or 10w40.

Not sure why but as the saying goes... "Why ask why"... I'm just happy it's not so smoky anymore.

As for if it's worth replacing them, depends on a number of factors IMHO. Here in Cali, I'll probably need to replace my cat in 2 years when the inspection is due again so I won't bother replacing them until then but if you don't be prepared for the cat to be more easily clogged by all the particulate matter going through from the burning oil. Since yours is a 97 (mines and 96SR) you probably aren't far behind me as far as your cat is concerned... but then it also depends on your state's testing requirements.

HTH.

If it's not right, and you know what it is, fix it. Why would you drive around with a problem for which the fix is well documented and wait for it to cause other issues? Your wallet, and other drivers, will be thankful if you take care of it sooner rather than later.

We should go to Quartzsite, buy some rocks at a rock shop and hang out with Mx. We'd have to leave before the sun went down, though. No tellin' what happens then.

I say replace those stem seals, replace the spark plugs and wires and be done with it.
