Is there anyway I can drive (less than 50miles) with out my rear drive shaft in place? Just leave it in 4x4 and run it as FWD? Does the rear drive double as some sore of fluid seal?

Probably not if you don't seal the xcase after you remove it. It's a slip yoke design and fluid does come out when it's not in place. You can ask some of the regulars who've been on here since the early days how I found this out... The rear driveshaft seals the transfer case. You'd find that out by pulling the rear driveshaft and having the resulting gear lube waterfall.

Don't try driving without it.

I'be done it for a short distance before trying to narrow down a vibration. You can buy a transmission stop off tool. You basically jam this in when you remove tranny's to keep fluid from leaking out. I used mine for about 3 miles or so and it stayed in. If I was going to go longer with it, I would make sure it didn't fall out. Wire, strap sometime so it doesn't pop out.
Just like anything, you might break the it or the seal if you jam it in to far or too hard.

I ran a couple weeks without a rear driveshaft while a new longer one was being made. Put a 2 " rubber plumbing cap, that kinda with a hose clamp on the output housing. It will steer abit funny and eat more gas but you can get by in a pinch,,50 mph is about as fast as I'd go.
