On the trailer, that is... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

It will be a 5,000# max weight, with about 6' between the fenders, and I'll have a front tow hitch, so I can (generally) back it forward.

Thanks

How long of a trailer are you looking to build? The tongue on our horse trailer is 2', overall length is about 16'. The tongue on the car trailer project is about 4', overall length is 20'. The utility trailer tongue is about 3', overall length is about 9'.

I would evaluate how your load bed centers the weight over the axle, the distance from hitch to axle center-line, and figure how fast you want the trailer to react when backing.

Overall, the trailer is 8.5' wide, with a 6' wide bed. Length could be anywhere from 8' to 18', depending on how the final design works out.

I have found that the longer the tongue, the easier to control while backing. I imagine that the distance between the hitch and the trailer wheels is the real distance that is important - that and the possibility of hitting your rear bumper if the turn is too tight and getting the back door all the way open with the trailer attached.
