Need a Spot
My 98 Isuzu Rodeo has a intermittent start problem. Just hear a click sound for the first time when start, but afterward start well. It can happen any time of the day. Sometime can be started, then engine kill after a few seconds. Anyone know what the problem is?

Regards

Roll Me Over
First, welcome to the site. While my expertise is on the older Isuzus, there are some common factors, so I will give it a shot.

When you say that it just clicks, that sounds like either a starter issue, a battery issue, or a wiring issue. If your battery is the original, it is way past its expected life expectancy.

I would start by checking all the wiring to the starter, both the primary and the secondary. If there is any sign of corrosion (green corrosion) on the primary cable, the big one, then I would replace the cable. If there is corrosion showing, then there is most likely corrosion under the insulation that you can't see.

If the wiring checks out, then I would suspect the starter.

The one symptom that isn't consistent with this analysis is that occasionally the engine dies after a few seconds. That is consistent with a faulty fuel pump relay. The relay is by-passed during the start cycle so the engine will start and then shut down if the relay is bad.

Since once the engine starts the starter circuit is no longer active, you have presented two different sets of symptoms that aren't necessarily contradictory, but may indicate more than one issue.

I thought about your symptoms some more and thought of another possibility. You may have a loose ground connection.

Body Damage is Cool
When my starters are going out on the 3.2's that is what always happens to me. Do the easy stuff first, like cables and such, but prepare for a starter repacement.

1987 trooper LS.'94 3.2, SAS,35's , lots of dents and rust. Now, improved, with more dents.
1995 trooper LS. Wife won't let me improve this one.
1996 trooper. I'll need something to modify when the '87 finally rusts away.

A bit late replying but in regard to the starting issue....I went thru this with a '95 3.2l Rodeo. Turned out to be worn contacts in the starter. Removing the starter in a '95 3.2l Rodeo involved pulling the exhaust system in order to gain clearance. Nut/bolt removal was by feel as the starter is way up in there - out of plain sight. It's a can-do if you're patient.
