Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
heroo, new here...just picked up a 87 montero has a problem im hoping someone gimme some insight on.
After replacing the starter...it will crank over but only if I run a wire from the postive terminal on the battery to the white/black wire on the ignition switch and a when its running it will only stay running if I hold the key between "start" and "on" I got a new igntion switch but I still need to jump it....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you put the correct wires on the correct terminals on the starter?

pretty sure...could double check it, I suppose. Thought it was like this before replacng the starter when we pushed/pulled started it. Unless it was hooked up wrong to begin with.

Bump? Did you double check the wiring? Did you check for voltage drops in the circuits after the ignition switch?

starter is hooked up fin, havnt checked voltage yet but one of the little jumpers on that plastic clip above the drivers wheel is all fried...we took it off and one of the connectors inside is fried aswell. No idea if that has something to do with it but im thinking it does because we had issues with it when I bought it.
Anyone know what this is called/where I can find a replacement. I'll get a pic of it next time im out working on it.

Those are fusible links. Yes, they can cause issues if they're "fried." When you get a replacement, get a couple, because whatever fried the first one will likely fry the 2nd if the short isn't fixed yet.
