Getting the Wheeling Fever
Can someone tell me what model transmission and transfer case I have in my 96 Trooper? It's a 5 spd. I'm thinking of doing a GM 4.3 conversion and want to do some research to find out if an adapter is available... (kind of tough to do when I don't know what model tranny I have...) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I mistakenly posted this in the talk section - now I've also posted it in the tech section. Sorry about that...

You should have the MUA-5 Isuzu transmission. As far as I know, there has never been an adapter to a 4.3. There was once an adapter from the Isuzu tranny to the 4.3, but that hasn't been available for at least 10 years.

Yep, MUA5...with integrated transfer case.

It's a tough tranny, but aftermarket options are nearly nil. At least 3.07:1 crawler low range gears are available from Independent4x.

Thanks guys. Maybe the 4.3 isn't a viable choice then.

I asked about swaps some time ago and J Lemond volunteered some info about the 3.5 isuzu - I'll have to search and find that thread. Seems like the 3.5 is kind of spendy, so that's part of the hesitation with going that route...

I'll search around the forum and find my old thread as well as others concerning the 3.2 to 3.5 swap. If anyone has those threads bookmarked, feel free to post the links!

Thanks...

Body Damage is Cool
If you have your heart set on replacing the motor you may want to look into a northstar. You can get the mua5 with the 60* gm bell. You should then be able to work out a way to install the northstar. 300 hp stock and its a popular motor so stand alone harness kits are easy to come by.

1996 trooper. I'll need something to modify when the '87 finally rusts away.
