I told her I would ask the Trooper guys if it's a Interference engine. Google is full of conflicting information.

Thanks

Body Damage is Cool
The Isuzu-built 3.2 is a non-interference motor. No valves should be crunched. The biggest penalty for letting the belt replacement go on these is the potential for breakage somewhere down the road, with resultant non-running engine.

Take 'er down and install a new belt & water pump (the pump replacement being that compared to the cost of tearing it down again for a pump replacement, the pump price is relatively small).

Also recommend renewing hydraulic belt tensioner(s), as they are known to be problematic as well. When a belt tensioner goes bad it'll cause a noise that sounds exactly like a bad rod bearing.

And Big Swede (Steve)does know about changing the tensioner in a campground. Not the way to spend a day in Moab.

I have had the occasion to loose a timing belt on my '96 trooper. On the freeway north of Las Vegas at speed. Motor suffered no ill effects. I don't recomend replacing the belt in a supermarket parking lot, however.

1987 trooper LS.'94 3.2, SAS,35's , lots of dents and rust. Now, improved, with more dents.
1995 trooper LS. Wife won't let me improve this one.
1996 trooper. I'll need something to modify when the '87 finally rusts away.
