It's time to sell my baby. My 1989 Montero 3.0 LWB is officially up for grabs. I'm almost 18 with a full time job and gonna have to start thinking about moving out... Unfortunately for me, I was given the apple stem at birth which constitutes higher insurance rates <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> so to try and give me room to breathe, shes gotta go... She's got 225k on the clock and rolling slowly, no rust, and the original tear drop rims are even in imaculate shape... Was a Georgia truck from the beginning and only in the past 6 years was she brought to Michigan. Ran through a car wash once a week to keep the salt off her. My dad is an ASE master tech so it's always been maintained to the maximum. Oil changed every 3,000 with Valvoline maxlife, trans fluid flushed every 20,000. Both diffs have hypoid oil in them, and transfer case has synthetic fluid in it. She's got only two real dilemmas that kill me even. New bumper is needed and I just haven't gotten to Ypsilanti to get it, and the seat has some wear on her. In anybody would like more info on her, let me know and I'll get back with you. I'll post pics tomorrow when I get the chance. Thanks for looking and I hope to hear from you guys.

Thanks,
Steve <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

You arent going to find many cars that are cheaper on insurance. If you dont owe anything on it then you arent going to save money with any other car or truck.

x2. If it was your first vehicle and you love it and it still is in decent condition, hold on tight and don't let go! I still regret selling my 91 and all the glorious high school driving memories inside of it. If times are tight right now, take it off the road for a bit and revisit in a couple years. There's nothing like a gen1.

x3. Not sure if your state works the same as AZ, but the tags here are more expensive depending on the value of the vehicle. A newer truck here can run $700 or more tags, while an older vehicle may be $50. Something else to consider in the long term cost savings if your state works that way.

Since he's under 25, he may save a little ($100/year maybe?) by switching to something that's not 4wd. But not worth it IMHO especially if you have snow there.

My black 1990 was about $70 or so for five years. Five fraking years! It's insane! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Wow, you guys don't make this easy do ya? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Montey is still a very beautiful beast and I love that truck to death. I pulled an rv out of the mud with it and made a wrangler with 32's look like a tinker toy which might I add made my ego huge for a while hahaha. But in Michigan, insurance rates are some of the worst in the country. I am under my parents name to keep cost lower and it's still bad. I've been doing alright but I still have a bad feeling about selling her. For what I have done to get her and what I've done to keep her in proper functioning order, she could blow an engine tomorrow and I wouldn't think twice at putting one in just because it's done it's job a little too well. Not to mention I'm one of only 3 that are in decent shape in my area. That and plates run me 102 a year where my Volvo ( technically first car) run me 192 a year. So it's too cheap to ditch at this point. And yes I hear the first car thing all the time and I'm glad I haven't had a problem one with her that made me get rid of her.
