Could some one tell me how and what I need to rebuild my alternator for a 88' 4wd pickup with a 22re motor? Hoping it is cheaper than buying a new one.

^^^ Very likely that it is the brushes, but by the time you find them, install them, and all, it may be worth just buying the $50-60 cheapo alt...

If it is the original stock TOYOTA alt, do the brushes. Probably good for at least another 10 years, 100K miles. Get a cheapo swap out, you may by swapping annually. My 1985 has the original alternator. I did the brushes at 145,000 miles. I now have 270,000 miles. I may need brushes soon. I have not had issues since I did them in the spring of 2003.

Check around your community and see if there is a small electric motor repair shop. I just had the alt from my '90 3.0 cleaned/full rebuild this spring for $85.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

I put new brushes in the alternator on my '84 twice. at 240k miles it was still running strong. I never had any trouble finding brushes at NAPA. They cost around $5.00 last time I bought them. You will need a soldering iron both to remove the old brushes and to install the new ones. Sometimes "parts store" replacement alternators are not even OEM based, but are actually Chinese knock-offs. I prefer to rebuild an original piece.

I also use our local automotive electric rebuilders, as the dealers do.
If you don't have a soldering iron for redoing just the brushes, you should be able to order the brushholder assy w/the brushes from the Toyota dealer.
If the armature is fine (alt OR starter), keep your OEM parts. 'Cheapo' alternators are sometimes exactly that; caveat emptor.
