Hello fellow Mitsu owners. My 95 SR is running rough so I want to do a tune up(it will be my first time attempting this, with the help of someone more mechanically inclined than myself).
I was looking around the site to see if I could find a write up of a coil/wire/plug change to use as a guide but my search was unfruitful. If anyone could guide me to one that would be a great help.
Also wondering if it's better to use NKG or Bosch plugs and wires, or if it even makes a difference. I called the dealership for the coils and they want $96 a piece but found these http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=47764 for $50 each. Is there really much difference between the two?
Lastly, I found what appears to be two different types of spark plug tube seals. One type has a smaller circular part attached to it

Don't know on the rest. Others will chime in. Fleabay coils probably ok, but you don't know if one's bad until you get in there and see. Testing coils on waste spark engines is different. You have to see both plugs spark at the same time, so you have to clamp two plugs together to make good electrical contact at the threaded area (I use a small hose clamp), put the two wires on the plugs from one coil, and then crank the motor to test that coil for spark.

When I bought my SR it was running rough. I replaced all my plugs/coils and wires... It was the intake that was leaking that was causing the issues..May want to check that too.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know which type of spark plug tube seals are correct? The montero has 140k on it, should I replace the coils regardless?

IIRC, there is a procedure to check the coils in the FSM - you would be measuring the coil resistance utilizing the wiring harness plug on top of the intake plenum so you don't have to remove the coils. I'd start with that before replacing parts that don't need to be replaced. The coils on my 95 are still original with 211k miles on them, so they aren't something that needs to be replaced unless they test bad.

Pretty sure I know the answer to this is no, but is it possible to replace the plugs and wires without removing the intake?

Plugs: Yes, Wires: No. You can do the plugs although some will doubt me, I've done it a couple times on the two 95's I owned. The wires are routed around the back so you'll have to remove the intake plenumn to do those. Might as well do it and get it over with. This is a good time to check your intake for leaks and looseness around the butterfly valve shaft.

This continued talk of loose butterfly valves has me thinking they will definitely go away when I go thru mine.

Forgive me if I sound ignorant, but what do you mean they will "go away"?
