Got tired of the weak "meep meep" sound coming from the stock horns, so I went on a hunt for newer horns. I wanted to replace the stock horns with ones just like them, just a little louder. Unfortunately, none of the four auto parts stores I went to had the matching high / low horns, so I ended up buying one of those WoLo Bad Boy air horns (
http://www.wolo-mfg.com/air.htm). Finally got it installed, but WHAT A NIGHTMARE!
First off, it's not as simple as splicing the stock horn wires together into spade connectors then attaching them to the WoLo horn. I had to use the relay that came with the kit, install a 20A inline fuse to the battery, and install a toggle switch to work the horn.
I tested the horn by connecting it directly to the battery, to make sure it worked. It did, and it's nice and LOUD, and compact. I followed the wiring hookups in the instructions, and like I said, just connecting the stock horn wires did not work. I never could get the horn to work by pressing the center section on the steering wheel, thus the reason for adding a toggle switch.
Here in VA they have annual safety inspections, and I know one of the things they check is the operation of the horn. I think this setup will pass though, because IIRC, all they check is to make sure the horn works, not that it has to work by pressing the button on the steering wheel. So my toggle switch should be good to go.
I might have saved myself some trouble if I had gotten the Fiamm Freeway Blaster type of fluted horns, and just connected the stock horn wires to those, instead of getting the Bad Boy horn, which has a small compressor. But I wouldn't have been able to mount them in the stock locations, because they're too deep. I've got the Bad Boy horn mounted in the same general area as the stock horns, and man is it LOUD!
But at least using the relay and 20A inline fuse, this horn should work just fine, without blowing any fuses. If it does, at least it's a fuse that's dedicated just for the horn, and doesn't run thru the stock fuse block. I'll just have to remember that it works thru the toggle switch!
