Getting the Wheeling Fever
Has anyone here had the problem of their Sporty sounding like a tractor?

The lifters have slowly developed noise and now it is annoying the bejesus out of me!

I had a similar problem with a ute that I used to own, and it was the lifters hitting the inside of the rocker cover. However, when I replaced the Rocker Cover Gasket I noticed that there is quite a lot of clearance.

This has caused me to wonder if it may be the oil pump is not working properly, however looking on the Kia tech info site it appears that replacing the oil pump is quite a lot of mucking around which makes me wonder if it is worth the hassle, or should I just cheat and run a bottle of Moreys through it?

Anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any help I can get!

Just remedied that issue today as a matter of fact.

The oil drain back is part of the problem and as you mentioned, can be resolved. You need to use a filter that has the anti-drain back valve in it. The only filter from FRAM that fits the Sportage does not have this, so you need to use a better quality filter like WIX or K&N. By the way, the WIX filter is actually the OEM filter, and you can get it at most Auto Parts stors for less than the FRAM filter. I've tried the K&N filter and it's the same as the WIX, just costs >2X the price of all the other filters.

I was reading this thread just after I posted this one...

I'll be giving it a go first thing Monday after work when I can get access to a hoist. Thanks for your help!

You don't need a hoist to get to the oil filter, it's accessible from above. And I'm pretty sure the filters Walmart sells Purolator? have the valve in them.

Yeah but I will drop the oil and change filter at the same time. Plus I need to replace the wheel bearings so I may as well do it all at the same time!

Are you sure the bearings need replaced or just repressed with greas and tightened up?

I won't really know until I get it apart, but I'll probably replace them anyway as I believe that there was absolutely no regular maintenance to my Sporty before I got it!

Body Damage is Cool
The anti-drain back valve in the filter helps prevent the lifter noise, but if you already have it, you may need to do an adjustment. This is a known problem for the Sportage engine and it will only come back later. The problem I see with the instructions for the adjustment is that it asks you to bring the engine up to normal operating temp. By the time you get to this temp the knock goes way.

I've already done 3 sets of bearings on my Sportage. The design is poor and does not give you enough fine adjustment to be able to tighten them correctly. It's either too tight and you ware out the bearings early, or not tight enough and you get a lot of slop and ware out the bearings early. Make sure you use high quality grease when you do it. I'd recommend synthetic.

FYI, the hydraulic lifters in the sportage motor should be much like that of the 90-97 miatas. as long as this is the case, next time you do a timing belt, do yourself a favor. pull the cams out and pull all lifters out. pull them apart, clean them, re-assemble. i'd have to see a diagram for them to make sure, but it quiets them down. i've only had my truck for two days and instantly recognized the noise.

So, i bought an 01 Kia Sportage. before i even drove it, i nick-named it The Goat.. it has been just like a goat.. stubbern at every corner...

had the same problem. it started happening when my rig had about 100000 km on the clock (got 150 now) - it was worse on cold start - the noise lasted for about 4 minutes until the oil reached working temp.

i tried an oil additive that worked really well - its made by an american company called BG. this is the additive:

http://www.bgprod.com/products/engineoil.html

I usually change the oil every 5000 km (its not something that the factory recomends but i like to keep the oil fresh) and i have added that stuff last 3 oil changes. works well.
