Four wall are up... I have had some help from a friends son who likes to do framing.

Super nice kid but just a bit too eager. While I was cutting and fitting the top plates he was putting up plywood. I asked if he checked if the wall were square. He said yes they were.

This is an experiance thing. He checked with a level and didnt measure corner to corner. I figured he knew... I also asked that he only tack the panels in until I gave the go ahead and provided a nailing pattern.

After a couple of hours I walk over to his section. Lots of nails and lots of plywood is up and the wall is not square.

I nicely suggest that he remove the 100 or so nails he put in and do it right. With the nails out, I squared the wall and set him loose.

I also told him that if his nail gun continued to overdrive the fasteners, to set it up to underdrive and finish the nails with a hammer.

Again... Minimal number of fasteners... I will go by with my gun later and nail to code.

I come back and a full box of nails is gone and every one is over driven by at least .1". I'm sure the inspector will get a laugh out of this... 20 + sheets of 4' x 9" plywood that are trashed from over driven nails.

If the nails are overdriven, do another nailing pattern in the gaps that is correctly driven. What is your code? We do 7" on the edge and 12" in the field, plywood or osb. OSB is actually preferred for some reason.

OSB is not as tolerant of getting wet during construction. I'm building this on weekends and I live in Portland... I went with plywood.

6" on edges, 12 in the field. The issue is there is a limit to how many nails are allowed since it can cause splitting of the 2 x 4 behind the panel. In some areas he was spacing nails every 4". Those will probably need to come out.

The correct solution is as you noted, drive another pattern or if I'm past the allowed number of nails, pull the over driven ones. The other solution is to de rate the panel. I used 1/2". If a nail is driven so that wood under its head is 3/8 thick, then you use use the code for 3/8" plywood.

Either way I'm OK, it was just annoying as all hell. And the overdriven nails just look hack.

He's a great kid... But like anyone, makes an occasional mistake.

We did make good progress yesterday. 27, 24 foot rafters are up and blocked in place. I'm guessing we lifted about 3400 lbs of wood to the ceiling.

Ah, but did you have to teach him to read a tape? Every week? I got so damn tired of hearing the dummy walking with the tape calling out "18 and three little bitty marks"....

And then there is the preference for errors of commission as opposed to errors of omission.

And just think, even such magnificent creatures as ourselves were once just as callow a youth as this one.

A better perspective .. As allowed by time and distance. Its only plywood. The total cost of this project is about 24,000.

If I lose a couple of sheets of plywood (and I probably wont), in the grand scheme of things it's nothing.

Now I just need the weather to cooperate a bit.

I should have suggested mounting a GoPro camera (or equivalent) somewhere and having it take interval pictures to make a time lapse video of the process afterwards. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

If your lumber was wet when nailed I've seen the heads pop a 1/16 when dry. I guess pop is incorrect, The lumber swelled when wet then returned to correct moisture content.
This was Florida rainstorm wet.
There is a product you can spray the raw lumber to prevent any nasties growing.

What size is this monster garage? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

The plywood was dry when nailed.. And the heads were still sunk. The garage is 24w x 26 deep. In my opinion a decent sized garage for a house in the city.

I have time lapse clips on my facebook page. I will have to link them.

Wall Up

Header up

Two clips

I saw the pics, it has windows and everything. That's no garage, it's a massive size man cave <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Were does the CNC go?
