As the title states, there is a TSB for 89-91 Monteros and 4wd trucks describing adding friction modifier (ME580150) to the manual transmission.
Anyone doing this with theirs? If so, what brand of friction modifier did you use? Just a "generic" one for LSDs or did you go with the specific Mitsubishi product?
I'm curious as I bought some "Trans-X Posi-Trac" friction modifier today, but thought I would check the collective wisdom here before adding this to my M/T.
Thanks!

Hmmm. 64 views and not a single response
I guess I'll just have to try it and see what happens

Most of us have auto transmissions so this would not apply. The rest may have not seen the TSB. You're right, try it and see what happens.

Nothing from me. I have an auto, but interested because I have a 5-speed getting a motor this weekend. Did the plh tuff-pan, but really scared of the thing the way everyone bad-mouths the manual.

Did the plh tuff-pan, but really scared of the thing the way everyone bad-mouths the manual. Ah, it's not that bad. You just learn to double-clutch your downshifts on the gears where the syncros are... questionable Eric W.

I am a bit late here, why would you want to add friction modifier to a manual transmission? Most of us want our syncros to actually grip. The friction modifier reduces grip which can do nothing but bad things to a transmission.

Wow this is new ...never heard of using friction modifier in the trans before. May work, I mean it may make for smoother shifting.
Should be no concern for slipping. Synchros in a trans and clutches in a lsd serve totally different purposes.
Give it a try, if it doesn't work, drain it out and replace with fresh gear oil.

I read that bulliten awhile back and we got quite a conversation going. I haven't been on here much lately either. I think the modifier is to help out with the slow synchros from 1st to 2nd. I just use Redline MTL - 1 or equivalent Amsoil in the trans. The only real important thing is that you "never" use GL5 gear oil as the sulfur in it eats your synchronizers.
