...but really scared of the thing the way everyone bad-mouths the manual.

I've a a manual 2.6 for almost 24 years - the same one. Don't beat the hell out of it, but it's not that bad a tranny. It's just not as bullet-proof as the other incarnations.

I've had mine rebuilt once in 245,000+ miles.

87 Montero, bought new, by me -

Here's a link that Kevin C. posted a couple of years ago to an article that explains why the friction modifier should be added

Interesting read... (executive summary: paper-lined syncros )

All 5 forward speeds are in constant mesh and synchronized. The 1-2 synchro rings are paper lined. The 5th-and-reverse synchro assembly is on the mainshaft. Reverse uses a conventional idler gear, and the reverse gears are helical cut for quiet operation. The lubricant specified for this trans is API GL-4 or GL-5. Because of the paper-lined synchro rings, a friction modifier should be added to the lube fill. One bottle of friction modifier, Mitsubishi part #ME581050, should ensure smooth shifts.

...and to clarify even further, TSB-93-22-001 states:

Purpose

The manual transmissions/transaxles in Mitsubishi Motors vehicles require the use of API GL4 classification gear oil. Using an incorrect API classification gear oil may affect the shift effort and may cause transmission/transaxle component damage.

Use only gear oils having the API classification GL4.

Mitsubishi Diamond Gear Lube - A991ZC2X01 -- SAE 75W - 85W GL4, meets this requirement.

CAUTION: Do not use gear oils having the API GL5 classification. GL5 oils have additives which many chemically react with sintered copper synchronizer rings leading to manual transmission/transaxle damage.

So, sounds like GL4 gear oil plus a friction modifier is what my version of the V5MT1 transmission wants
