Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a '98 sportage with a manual transmission that I've fitted the Warn manual hubs to. The 4 WD worked fine up until the other day, when driving down a muddy road, I got stuck. Turned out only the rear wheels would spin. No loud bang, nothing out of the ordinary, just lost the 4 WD. Transfer case shifts normally from 2WD to 4WD High, thru neutal to 4WD Low, but no power to the front wheels. It drives fine in 2WD, and the rear wheels have power in 4WD. Before I go find a used transfer case to throw at it, is there anything else I should be checking for? I assume that if I put the vehicle up on jacks, lock in the hubs and spin the front tires and the front driveshaft spins, the problem is internal to the transfer case.

Thanks.

John

You are right with your trouble shooting . Of course, this probably did not happen all by itself, only you know what kind of abuse the drive system might have suffer. In any case, do not forget to forward your findings so others can benifit from your mishap. Keep the little beast moving.

The front axle probably has an open-differential. Turning the front wheels with the hubs locked should turn the drive shaft (have to have both hubs locked, as I found with my Sporty). But I think you might get a better idea of what's going on if you put all 4 wheels in the air and test it with the engine running & turning the transfer case. If your drive shaft doesn't turn under power with the wheels in the air, then I suspect your problem is in the T-case...

1997 Sportage 4x4, auto-trans, Warn manual hubs, 4" UPYOURKIA front lift, TJ 106AA rear springs, 2-5/8" body lift, 31x10.50 treads, SmittyBilt SRC front and XRC rear bumper, swing-out tire mount, OBX LSD front diff, Track Finder rear locker, 5.38 R&Ps and... really crappy gas mileage!

I need to remember that the solution is almost always the 10 cent fix, not the 10 dollar fix.

Further investigation showed that only one of the manual hubs was actually locking, even though the cap would turn to the locked position. A disassembly, cleaning and lubrication of the offending hub was the solution.

Thanks for the responses.
