Here is the question first, then if you care, you can read my novel afterwards.......

Can I put SOHC 24v heads from a 6g73 in a stratus/sebring/avenger on a sohc 12v 6g72 montero block?

I realize I would need the associated intake/exhaust and what not, but is there any reason the heads and timing gear wouldn't bolt on? I figure the 2.5 would have a smaller combustion chamber, resulting in higher compression, and the smaller ports wouldn't be great for high HP, but would provide a nice low to mid range kick in the ass as far as torque goes with higher port velocity. and before you say anything, megasquirt to run it.

there are a few monteros around here in you pull it type junkyards, and a TON of chrysler products with 12v SOHC 6g72s and 24v sohc 6g73s. No 3.5 or 24v 3.0 engines though. I did find a page where a guy put a 12v 6g72 into a D50 truck. so, even the 3.0l fwd blocks will work in a rwd/4wd scenario. I could build the motor in the junkyard from the parts I want and walk out the door for around $200 with everything, including an ECU/wiring harness.

alright, a little background here.... i have a 1989 lwb montero 5 spd in great shape except for a motor that inexplicably has no spark on #2. mitsu dealer couldn't figure it out. swapped ECUs, distributors, sensors, coils wires, plugs EVERYTHING. it has a weak spark when its cold, and it goes away completely when its warm, only on #2. and it stumbles between 2k and 3krpm. the engine is old, has 254k on it, but has 180PSI on #2, and 100psi on #4 and 150 on #6. It's tired.

I bought a nissan FD35T for a repower project, but thats not going to happen for a year or 2.

If I had all the money I've ever spent on cars, I'd spend it all on cars.

I'm just guessing, since I have a 6G74, but the 12v Montero block may be missing the relief cuts in the pistons for the 24v heads. My 6G74 24v DOHC has 4 small reliefs cut in the top of the pistons for valve clearance. Not sure if the 6G72 is the same, but it may be something to consider.

I will look into that. I may have found a complete sohc 24v 6g72 out of a 2001 eclipse for $225 local, so I may just go that route.

That engine will for sure bolt up to my bell housing, right?

I know I will have to play games with manifolds, mounts and wiring/ecu. but at $225, already pulled, its way cheaper than I can find a RWD 6g72 for, and cheaper than my frankenstien engine just for the fact that I wouldn't have to re-gasket it.

Body Damage is Cool
Might be easier to find heads off older 3.0 caravans. (6g72)_
