This has happened to me more than once. Driving down the interstate and I am left standing by someone burning it up in a Prius (well as much as one can). I can't help but notice the irony

They are an easy car to speed in, due to the quietness and lack of engine noise at cruise.. You really have to keep your eye on the speedometer. My wife names all her cars based on some characteristic the car exhibits.. She named this one "A.J." (aka Foyt) because it is so easy to speed in...

The 2006 model I have has a 67hp 50kW main motor/generator that can produce 295ft/lbs of torque from 0 to 1200rpm that drives a roughly 3:1 axle ratio.. and the reason they all come with traction control to avoid crazy spinning of the tires (and most importantly, exceeding the 6000rpm limit on the smaller 10kW MG which will cause damage.

They reduced the max torque in the next generation on the main MG (the horsepower rating went up, but the maximum torque output was lowered.. and the smaller MG1 can now run up to 10,000rpm. On mine, it's way too easy to activate the traction control (which cuts back on the power) as the front wheels begin to spin. The above change on the next generation Prius solved this..

Here's my take on it;

Those cars go fast as easily as any other car hybrid or not. Shoot I've caught my self going 90 in my wifes Kia Rio. What makes it different is because the car is "capable" of 50MPG, the drivers figure what the hell, I'll go 85 on the freeway and make it up in the city.

I have also noticed that hybrid drivers tend to not give a flying F about anyone else on the road (a generalization), it seems because they spent $20k too much on an economy car, they get to be A-holes. When I'm driving my truck, I swear the next time a friggin prius cuts me off or hits the brakes right in front of me I'm turning it into hybrid confetti...

Sorry, I'm in LA county, so I see a lot of crazy on the roads here. Rant over...

IIRC, Top Gear UK did a comparison test with a prius driving all out and an Audi R8 driver just keeping up with it. Audi got better gas mileage.

PLEASE click this!

This is a friends site, and the photos are protected, so I can't just add the shot. This was a road rally result board from an event held in Sun Valley, Idaho. Carefully check ALL the cars on that board

I want to be in the Hagenbach family, but I don't want to be Jay. His speed must have been so fast they wouldn't put it up on the board so it wouldn't fry Hillary or Hunter's little egos. Or so slow. He does have the uncool name in the familiy, after all...

And Jeez, It is kind of funny to see the Prius Poop Pile on that list. And I can hear Enzo turning over about 12k rpms in his grave, including that lovely ripping canvas sound of the v12, over a Ferrari name the Tour de France... After such gems of a name as Testa Rossa, Superamerica, Dino, 275GTB4 NART, some Fiat drone put in charge at Ferrari because he can't make it with the econobox side who rides his bike to work comes up with Tour de France??? This is a company with 'nads, whose owner once told a complaining buyer that since he didn't like his 250, the company was taking it back and giving him back his money, as he was not good enough for a Ferrari, and made it stick.

There are no really good car crazies making cars anymore, it seems. So sad...

Before you start, I know Carrol Shelby is still above dirt and putting his name on cars. Doesn't count. He's just a very good snake oil salesman, and the pun is intentional. He had to have some damn good engineers around him to build anything that would run, and the magic in Cobras is due to them, not the smooth talking Texas con man. He just pushed the product, by whatever means necessary.
