I fitted a new rear main seal into the bracket/carrier (whatever) for my daughter's Montero and the service manual calls for anaerobic sealant, but I'm not sure where to put it. Any tips?
Also, is Vaseline OK on the end of the crank shaft to help bed in the new rear main seal?
Cheers fellas

they sell it at napa. I just used it on my rear cam caps. Made for metal to metal contact with tight , tight tolorance. The anerobic sealant as labeled is the just same thing as the gelled locknot.

Thanks guys. I just noticed that Permatex anaerobic sealant is $50 for a tube the size of thread locker <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> The seal carrier has a gasket between it and the block so I don't really understand why the anaerobic sealant is necessary.
Anyone change a rear main without it and had no issues?

a small tube of anerobic here is $8.00,,,,large 17. thety must have it priced wrong. My rear seal retainer just has a paper gasket on it. RTV is too thick in my opinion to use in that tight a space, esp. since you don't want to go back in and do all that work for any leak that developes. I'dcheck a different napa or try carquest.

Thanks. I got a small tube of anaerobic sealant in carquest for $5. Should go in there more often really. It's a lot better than zombiezone.

I used to use hylomar on copper head gaskets around the water and oil ports, and on intake gaskets. Good stuff. Hard to find sometimes. KopperKoat is a poor relation.
