Body Damage is Cool
Brothers truck is showing the typical signs of a failing input shaft bearing.

What does it take to replace one of those?

I know the trans needs to be dropped, but does it need to be dismanteled to get to it, or just the bell housing and the front of the trans?

Any and all help is appreciated as usual!

Thanks,
Todd

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just did a clutch change on my 3 VZE. Drop the gearbox, take off the pressure plate and clutch disk. You'll need a special tool to extract the bearing out of the crank. I used a 3/8" allen head bolt, app. 4" long and shaved one side of the head off so it would reach inside the inner race. Took a piece of flat stock, long enough to reach across the flywheel. Drilled a hole in the center so the bolt would go through and used a nut to slowly crank the bearing out. I pried a smaller screw driver between the inner race and the bolt so it wouldn't slip out. Worked great and I only needed one try to get it out. Be very careful when you insert the new pilot bearing as you can easily slip off the outer race surface and damage the seal.
Carefully look at the throwout bearing as the steel collar might be worn and needs replacement too. I installed a brand new Sachs clutch with flywheel etc. for 240.- Crank seal was extra though.
good luck,
ed

I think he means the input shaft on the tranny, not the pilot bearing.
A typical way to remove that bearing, is to pack it with greaase then get a rod the diameter of the hole in the bearing, and hammer it in there to make the grease push the bearing out.

Too messy.
Small peices of wet newspaper stuffed in there.
Easy cleanup..

Yup, talking about the input shaft bearing in the tranny.
I thought I replied earlier, but in any case, the decision was to go with a Marlin Crawler HD rebuilt instead of tearing into this one.
He's going to keep it for at least 5 more years for work field trips in New Mexico.
Thanks for the help!

Todd
