Body Damage is Cool
Your year is close to the time they switched from cable driven speedo to the electrical version.
By the description, sounds like you have a cable driven one.
Easy to replace, just have to take the dash 1/2 apart to pull the instrument cluster (I think), then the rest is under the cab.
Good time to change out the radio if that was ever planned <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Poke your head under the passenger side of the truck and look at the back of the transfer case. If you see a big fat cable screwed into the side of the case, you have a mechanical speedo/odo:

If there is a sensor screwed in there with a couple of wires coming from it, then it is electronic.

The FSM (Factory Service Manual) has a testing procedure for the VSS, using an ohm meter to check for the signals coming out of the sender. If that tests OK, then it could be wiring between the sender and the speedo/odo or the speedo/odo itself is the problem.

Not sure on the repair, I think that is a passive device, might see if you can open it up and have a look.

Marlin carries some lower cost replacements:

Or you might see if you can snag one at a junk yard:
