Hi guys , I got a question. When I swap the NP242 into my jeep , with it having the ESY , instead of the ISY like the NP249, do I have to grease the hell out of the drive shaft and output shaft inside that rubber boot? I know the internal lubricated itself , but not sure about the external yet.Once it warms up ( it is -38 here for the next few days) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> I plan to do the swap. The new seals are on the transfer case , I have a new rear seal for the transmission , and I also have the donor driveshaft seeing as it is external instead of internal like the 249.Looking at the driveshaft side of the boot , it seems there was some grease in there.

Yes it needs to be greased. Every so often, it will need to be removed, cleaned and regreased. What you will hear and feel when it needs grease is a loud thump from the back of the vehicle just as it stops and the rear end settles. The thump is caused by the shaft and splines starting to bind, then suddenly slipping as you stop.

Thanks Marty , that was exactly what I was looking for.I didn't want to stick grease in there and then find out it didn't belong.I will make sure I take the boot off and clean it up and put all fresh grease in there before I put it on. I was going to install my up country springs and 1" spacers first as I heard with stock height you have to shorten it by 3/4 of an inch or so , and I don\t want to do that , so it can wait a little longer.
so , as soon as it warms up I will get out there and get the mini lift installed , then the transfer case. The intake will be the bigger job so save that for last.It sucks not having a shop to work in , especially when it gets cold this time of year.
