Replaced a trailing arm finally #1041030 01/29/12 03:23 AM

Well I finally gave up the idea of replacing the bushings on the trailing arms I pulled from a 1994 in a yard down the road. They are a year older than my SR's but they are in much better shape, the arms still had paint on them compared to my rusted to death arms. Can't beat around $50 for them. The Montero I pulled them off was rolled, the engine was gone, most of the tools were gone and the skid places were off too. I wanted to take the hitch attachement but the vehicle fell off the rims, aka yard jack stands, it was supposed to be sitting on and resting on one rim that made the hitch impossible to take off. Which meant I had even less room to take the trailing arms off, it whooped me so bad I had stretch marks on my biceps. Since then I've started to workout again.

Installing them was simple, but doing anything without the right tools always makes it a bit of a head ache. I need to buy a highlift someday. I was very scared of driving it at first but eventually took it on the highway and got up to 75 without any wobble.

I'd add POR15 to the entire bottom of your rig + a UV sealer or UV safe paint to cover it all.

So, you're saying you didn't replace the bushings in the replacement trailing arms? If not, why the heck not?

Remember to torque the poop out of those nuts on the forward ends. Its like 180ft lbs. I rechecked mine not long ago and had to up them somemore as the rubber squished. I used new rubber, they are avail still from Mitsubishi and are really cheap.

I checked Mitsubishiparts.com and came up with $135 before taxes and S&H, RockAuto only has the fronts. Does that sound right to you guys? I'd love to replace them all but, it seems a bit steep to me. I've been looking around here for another Gen II because I hate how much rust I have. It's sickening how much of a difference the vehicles are down here compared to up north.

Also the POR15 sounds great...on a vehicle in better shape than mine. There are a few nice Gen II's down here that I would love to paint the frame, and almost everything else with the rust protector. But on my Montero I would have to put in many hours with the tap, new bolts, alot of rust scrapping, prepping, and then painting. Rust is just overwhelming on it.

Outback Technologies 914-302-2431 (yes I'm a broken record and no I don't work or have anything to do with them besides buy from them) can get Superpro ploy bushing for them. Need to have a OD measurement for the trailing arm to axle side. www.superpropoly.com is the site and they are from Down Under.
