Yep, us old timer been doing that for years. Can even swap out the old engine for another one in less than an hour, that includes a beer break.

VW's are great.

Once upon a day in Death Valley, cruising Orange Thunder near Tea Kettle Junction, the air injection pump froze up causing very loud belt squeal. My professor, uncertain of what to do was going to return to Funeral Creek to contact the CSU mechanic....some 300 plus miles away.

I removed the offending belt with my knife and proffered the 'let's go' look...

Off we went to Saline Valley and Racetrack.

Ah, I used to love working on a Bug. Two of us did an engine swap in 27min once, without a jack. Picked up the rear end with a pair of 2x4's, set a pile of 2x6 chunks underneath to hold it up, and 4 bolts later (plus a couple of wires and cables and hoses), the blown motor was on the ground. Install went faster.

Not responsible for advice not taken...

My friend and I removed a 1100 beetle's engine this way:

 • Remove all pipes and wires.
 • Loosen bolts holding tranny to engine.
 • He gets under car, directly below engine.
 • Remove bolts.
 • Lower engine onto his chest.
 • I lift the body over the cooling fan assy. (by hand, that's what those bumpers were for, no?).
 • Push the Beetle out of the way.
 • Help him to get the engine off his chest.

Installation is the opposite, but more tricky, due to gravity now working against you!

A lot of fondness for the Type 1 Bug...

My first car was a 1969 Beetle I bought new in Long Beach, CA after I got back from my tour of duty in sunny south east asia (Yankee Station)....on a DDG in company with Carriers Coral Sea and Ranger during my Navy service..
