Please help me ensure this is right before I add it to the FAQ post.

One thing I'm not sure about is the availability of manual transmissions for each model year.

TIA...

Ray, all 3.5 V6 had the V5M31 5sp.
I'm sure all 3.5 V6 had the V4AW3 4 sp auto and also later 3.0 V6 possibly from 96 on ? I'm pretty sure the only difference between the two auto's is the later one is fully ECU controlled the earlier one is more mechanical.

Thanks Frank. I can't recall if the manual tranny gen II's ever came to the US. My initial guess is either no or yes with exceptionally limited availability. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I just put a 90 auto motor in a 97 auto and the tranny is not at all the same. The 97 is a good deal larger the flex tq convertor is larger on it as well.

That 90 probably had a KM148 transmission versus the larger gen II V4AW2 tranny.

There may be some level of error in the above as it was taken from Outer Limits 4x4's Pajero forum and they may have some inaccuracies. I'll modify the final copy.

Yeah I put the Outer Limits data together based on Oz models only obviously other markets may have different combinations.

The gen 1 89/90 Manual trans is a bit beefier than the one behind the 4 cyl. Not sure about the # designation on the v6 gen1 manual trans.

Man trans was avail in the gen 2's in the US. I've seen them but they're rare.

That's correct :-
Gen 1 V6 had the V5MT1 5sp
Gen 1 V6 had the V4AW2 auto
Gen 1 2.6 had the KM145 5sp
Gen 1 2.6 had the KM148 auto

It gets tricky for the later model Gen 1 here in Oz as there was some mixing of 5sp boxes (no autos for the diesels) and indeed rear diffs. There was a V5M21 5sp used around 89/90 for both the 2.6 petrol & 2.5 diesels. We have also seen both 8" and 9" rear diffs in Gen 1 2.5 diesels as well.

Hey Frankie, long time no see! Welcome back, thought the dingos had got you...

Early models also had a 3spd a/t, a torqueflite of some kind, maybe as early as 83 up to 86.

KM148 and the first vw4x are the same tranny, different name. I think KM145 is the same as V5M21, too, alloy case 5spds with 4g54 2.6 wideblock bellhousing, also fit diesels. V5MTx's were iron case 5spds will alloy bellhousings.
