Hey All! I've been lurking the forum ever since I got my Montero last fall. Thank you all for such a great source of info. From all the searching I've done on here/elsewhere it seems to me my little repair plan should work but I'm looking for verification:

I have a 90 RS LWB and the tranny synchros are going, and the transfer case has failed to engage as well. Lucky for me there's an 89 (also LWB) out in my local junkyard with a stick that looks to be in better shape than mine. Is there anything to be weary of making this swap?

The Gen I V6 5-speed is the same at least for the 89 - 91 model years. The t-case changes for the Gen II and was used until the 1995 model year. Check for input shaft bearing wear, seals and the usual check-before-you install stuff.

Make sure to keep the shifter handles, as these are getting difficult to find.

Those transmissions SHOULD be the same.

I just got done removing, and repairing a V5MT1. Take them both out together.

Welcome .... I see your in Prescott too ..

Theres three V6 5 speeds in the J-yard right now matter of fact ... The differant numbers in the trans is about the first gear blocker ring trying to get the composite blocker ring on first gear to work ...Find the trans with the latest number will have the best (sort of) first gear blocker ring in it ...Its a crap shoot the composite blocker ring does not work or last on ever the later trans... I reman my trans with brass blocker rings ...The composite rings are used all through the trans line in those years...

When a automaker comes up with a new tech that they say is better then sliced bread .. And it does not work out right ... They do not back off of it ... They can't say it failed.. They keep dicking with it untill it either works or time takes over and the said part becomes obsolete ...Thing like Ford twin eye beams ..Chev quad-4 motor ..Hondas oval pistons ..Mitsu composite blocker rings.. and so on

I will pay the core if I can have your old trans ...I can reman it ....

haha

How much is the Upull it charging for the transmissions? Ours are 67.50. It's almost worth it to buy all 3.

There $86.00 plus $35.00 core... Thats allmost free in my book...

Man Landraider I've been doing this along time from eight years old in my uncles aircraft junk yard is were I started.. I'm 47 and have NEVER done any thing but to pay the bills ... Could bring up a mess of things but people dont want to here it ..Things like the CAFE law (look that up..Know one ever knows about it and it governs every thing on a car)and how and why there "saying" all the new high end spark plugs ..watery oils ..Dex cool and so on is SOOO great.. ... But I get hammered on here so I shut up and just dont post ... You would think with my back ground I would be the one that should be posting ..Oh well gives me more time to work on my own toys .. . I really not trying to rock the boat and I dont just pull stuff out of thin air or out of my a$$...

The automakers are liars ......!!!...Its about money ..smog ..and mpg in that order...

Thanks for the info. HazToys, you even saved me a phone call out to P-V. Most likely I'd be happy to pass the old tranny onto you. I'll be in touch. not sure how fast I'll get to this, but it had better be soon.

You must me new to the car game ... Calling a junk yard is a waste of time they never seem to really know whats in there yard ...One of the 5speed montys and the auto will be crushed soon ... You can easily tell if the trans is good by pulling the 'shifter tower' and looking if the blocker ring is up against the gear ...And feeling the bearing if there smooth ..But you would have to pull the trans on a Monty to tell...

Is the trans going into reverse smoothly ...?
