Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'll be replacing my cracked timing cover this weekend (87 22R 4wd) and I have a couple of questions regarding the process.

1. Do I have to drop the oil pan?
2. If I do have to, can I remove the motor mounts and lift the engine high enough to get the pan off without dropping the front diff?
3 Any tips from those who have done this before?

Thanks for the help

This is the task for doing the TC swap:

Unless you find some broken guides in there, your oil pan should be okay. We usually tell people when they've had a chain fail to pull the oil pan and get all their pieces out of there, because the boss for the drain plug stands up too high; about an inch- to flush junk out of it.

If you had to go there, if the valve cover is off, it gives you some extra room for jacking.

Water pump. Minimum of sealant; no goobers. Use a 1/4" drive to put it back on so you DON'T break anything. No torque for the 22Rx pump.

Top bolt that hides in front of the cam is only something like 9 ft-lb, seen a lot of TC's cracked there.

Get yourself a piece of cardboard to punch your bolts into; the oil pump has 3 bolt lengths; you DO want to put them back in the right spots. The bolt above the relief valve gets some sealant put back on it when it goes back together, or you'll have a leak.

If you have power steering, make SURE you take some pics of the bracketry BEFORE you take it off there, or you'll be scratching your head putting it back together. I also punch down the bolts in some cardboard for that stuff too. Makes a bit slow going, but it'll go back together a LOT faster. Also keeps your place if you need to walk away from it.

Keep it all CLEAN. Take the time to clean your parts and surfaces; you'll be glad you did.

This is also a good time to check your crankshaft pulley to see if it needs a speedy sleeve. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Thanks kewlynx,

I don't need to do a timing chain job, just replace the timing cover.

Can I take the timing cover off and put the new one on while leaving the oil pan alone? I was thinking I would have to drop it so I don't ding up the head gasket that extends beyond the block.

Thanks again
