Several months ago my Rodeo (Æ01 LS V6, manual trans.) started making a rather unique sound. There is apparently some sort of valve (emissions maybe) located possibly above the transmission. After about 30sec from a cold start, it makes a kind of ôwhirring gerbleö sound, that fluctuates in pitch with the engine rpm. After warming up it stops, but during that time it is rather annoying. Has anyone run across this in the past, or possibly have an idea what it may be? Thanks for any insight!

Is that the infamous "tape rewinding" noise people used to complain about? (It's getting so people probably don't even remember what a cassette tape rewinding sounds like.)

Having said that, even if it is I don't recall ever hearing a solid cause and fix.

You might want to check your shifter boot, make sure the rubber is intact. It is pretty common for them to get brittle and crack after a while, definitely would make any noise underneath come through louder.

Thanks Steve. No, the cassette rewinds fine. It grinds extremely loud now when played, so I stopped using it till I can repair it. Yes, I still record and use cassettes; IÆm a Techno-Neanderthal.

The shifter boot is fine. I have checked under the hood. The sound/noise is not coming from the engine or transmission itself. It is definitely some sort of valve. From beside the vehicle, the sound is coming from the transmission area. I suppose I could try running a piece of hose (like a stethoscope) down past the engine, or reach up from underneath to try and better pinpoint the exact location.

I have a set of Isuzu manuals, but I havenÆt a clue what to look for. If I knew what it was that was making the noise, I could find it in the manuals.

Sorry, I was unclear. The "tape rewinding" noise people used to complain about had nothing to do with the cassette deck, that was just the closest description people could come up with to the type of noise in question.

Sounds like some sort of EGR issue. I would definately try to pinpoint it a little better.

There are no other symptoms? Shifts fine, idles same as it used to, brakes are working properly? Just ruling out vaccum leaks.

Hi Jeff,
No vacuum leaks that I know of. Brakes work normally, no idle issues, shifts fine. Everything is normal except for this odd noise that I believe is coming from some sort of emissions related item mounted in the transmission area.

I had shoulder surgery last week, so I won't be crawling around under the Rodeo anytime soon. Any other ideas, please let me know.
