Gas cans on back door? #1044426 03/27/12 04:05 AM

Hi all, need to get some more fuel capacity for the Raider for some of the trips I want to do. I'd like to get two 10 gal gas cans on the back door, external of course. I suppose I could carry the fuel cans inside, but space is already at a premium in this little thing.

I'm looking for ANY suggestions. I've contacted a couple of local fabricators but neither has responded to me. So far the most promising thing I've found is this:

But that's only one. I'd like to do TWO. Is that too heavy for the spare tire mount?

Right now the 14 gallon take will take me comfortably about 160 miles, but some of the destinations are that far away with very little fuel available in between.

Thanks as always for any suggestions!

My buddy is running that setup on his Montero. A single can adds alot of weight to the stock tailgate. Dual cans would stress it even more, but you could use an adapter like that and make an additional bracket to hold two can racks side to side.

Maybe your fabricator could make a swing open can rack/tire carrier/bumper like they commonly use on Jeeps?

On my buddy's Montero, we ended up installing a 20 gallon plastic gas tank from a YJ jeep with a homemade skid plate/mount.

Rear view, bottom is 1/4" thick, sides 10 guage:

Front side, fabbed and welded square tube mounting brackets to the front of the gas tank crossmember:

Marty, that's some good stuff there. The cans for that Blitz thing are only five gallons BTW.

That makes since the fuel in one of those cans is roughly 40# not to mention what the can weighed and the mount if you doubled it up it would be like carry three spares on the back door.

Well, 10gal of gas is about 61 lbs. I weigh 2.5x that, and I've jumped onto the spare tire from a roof rack with no ill effects.

With the single can and a 31-10.50 tire, my buddy's tailgate is pretty loose on the hinges, and a little hard to close. We do try to dump the 5 gallons in as soon as there is room for it while we are out in the desert. The rig has around 200k miles on it, most of which with the added can mount on the spare tire carrier. I'm pretty sure the mount we used is a "Con-Fer" mount, with the Con-Fer can carrier clamp.

That trail ready piece looks nice but kinda expensive for a square metal tube. I have an idea of how I would mount mine once I do my chop top that would fit nicely. O yeah I like the beafy looking fuel tank box. this has inspired me on my fuel tank lift project.

Thank you everyone for your valuable input on this! Its been very helpful. I think I'm going to go ahead and go this route with the adapter I posted the link to, but I might only do one gas can, at least at first, simply based on cost. If that doesn't work out I'll figure something else out.

That gas tank setup looks pretty nice, but I'd have to get a lot more than another 5 gal capacity to make it worth swapping tanks.
