Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hello Everybody, I am new to this place; briefly I bought a 96 Montero SR from a guy for $1200 a couple of weeks ago, it was driving good apart from the strange engine shake, the guy could not speak English but through his daughter translating he mentioned that he does not want to invest more on the truck and is not sure it will pass the emissions (offcourse it failed when he did it but did not tell me)... he did although put on new timing belt and water pump... I took a gamble bought the truck thinking that the engine vibration might be an engine mount or some emissions system tweaking...turned out to be a zero compression cylinder #6...attempted to remove the head without taking out the engine but operation came to a halt... thanks to stupid water hose connections in the back... finally found a guy who agreed to do a complete engine overhaul for $1800, including new oil pan gasket for the tranny.... Need to add that Vin M 8th digit engines are scarce and they charge around $1200 for one with more than 100K miles. I should be able to get this baby back in a week and start my projects with it... one includes a 9K lbs Winch installation, but do not want to change the bumper. I came across this mount on HB website, I would really appreciate inputs from our Montero experts in here: Link: Winch mount link

Welcome, Check some of my build threads for mounting a winch into the stock location. I never retain the stock bumper but I like to "curb feel" out on the trail so a heavy service bumper is vital. '99 build Lloyds '95 SR build

As has been said, fix it and you'll get years of enjoyment from it. As for the winch, there's no need for a special mount. You can simply weld a piece of 1/4" plate between the frame rails and mount the winch there and have the winchline come out through the stock bumper (using a fairlead of course).

Thank you, my problem is that I do not have a weld machine/weld experience, leaning more towards a cheap bolt-on option.

Thank you, my problem is that I do not have a weld machine/weld experience, leaning more towards a cheap bolt-on option. Maybe you can have someone cut & weld a plate on for you? We're not talking anything terribly complicated... Afterwards, you can drill out 4 holes that you'll bolt the winch to. Problem that concerns me with that plate is I don't trust it won't fold in on itself when I'm winching.

Welcome some of those more in the know on this engine please comment... I believe block and heads from the 3.5 used in the Hyundai GL350 , like 2003 ,,,and the early Kia Sedona van and Sorento are leftovers bought from Mitsubishi when they were more startup companies. If so there are many more heads , blocks, and cores out there to work with and at a lower price by not being an engine only used 2 years in the U.S. market in Monteros only.
