Usually you loose all but 3rd, we've never had any luck with those KM145's. My suggestion as always is remove the Chrysler trans and swap in the Aisin auto

Need a Spot
if you decide not to fix the truck I would be willing to buy the two front skid plates from you if you want to sell them

When mine failed, I lost all but 4th. I'd pull the shifter and see what moving the shift rails by hand does. May have lost the 3-4 shift fork connection to the rail. This would mean that you can not lock 3rd or 4th to the shaft to engage those gears. Since 1 and 2 engage, I don't think you have the classic bad input shaft the km145 is known for, but it's possible...

I pulled of the shifter and shifted the rails by hand and put it into 3-4 gear.i can see all the shift rods moving and working. i am guessing it is the shift fork that possibly broke or maybe a roll pin. is there any info on how to rebuild this transmission or is there a stronger tranny out there? will the v6 montero tranny fit into the 4cyl mighty max?

v6 5psd will not fit. You're stuck with the km145.

I think it's:

shift fork spring pin came out or broke
3-4 syncro failed

Try pulling the tranny bottom pan and see if there are any bits in there. Drain tranny juice over a magnet to look for fines. Move the shifter and see if the 3-4 shift fork moves.

89 montero fsm on mitsubishilinks.com (iirc).

The spring pin is accessible from the bottom pan, and can be repaired in the truck. If it's the syncro pair, you have to tear down the tranny. It's not real hard, but you may need some special tools. I managed with normal hand tools to rebuild a similar tranny (mazda R in a Navaho).
