So im getting ready to do an oil change, and id like to put more thought into it. Last year I went with some filter and decided on some cheapo full synthetic oil.
I have researched here, and found that the napa gold (or platinum?) is a good oil filter to use, my question is regarding what kind and type of oil should i go with.
Within the last 6 months my monty has finally started to smoke after i hit the gas after idling (leaky valve guides?), so i dont know if this should be considered with the type of oil you guys recommend.
I searched and someone recommended Mobil 1 synthetic extended performance, and im also not sure whether to go with 5w-30 or 10w-30, or something else...I live in Oregon where we have temperate weather all year round.
Thanks for any opinions

NAPA Gold/Purolator Pure One/Stock Mitsu filter are good. Just don't use Fram of any type. Their anti-drainback valves suck.
Oil? Get ready for an avalanche of opinions. If your truck doesn't leak or burn too much, I'd use Mobil 1. You can't leave it in long enough to need the extended performance formula, I'd think, with a truck as old as it is.
Use the recommended weight, which I can't recall off the top of my head...10W-30?

awesome, so any mobil 1 full synthetic will do? I think i drive pretty light, i dont tow anything and barely ever wheel it offroad. The only oil leaking, i believe is through the valve guide seals.

True but it may also be overkill and simply money wasted if his driving habits don't require it. I think i drive pretty light, i dont tow anything and barely ever wheel it offroad. The only oil leaking, i believe is through the valve guide seals. How many miles per year on average? % City vs Highway? As far as oil loss, how much is lost between oil changes? Are you driving the steep grades of the Cascades or just around town? Like I said, Mobil 1 (various grades available these days) may be fine or it may actually be overkill for your needs so I won't blindly just recommend it since it ain't exactly free.

city and highway I only put about 8K on the monty in the last 14 months. I usually dont take it into the Cascades although i do have one trip planned this summer that will. Honestly this smoke after idleing is so new I havent really kept track how much ive been putting into it (im going to start though) Walmart seems to have a good price on Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-30 Full Synthetic for 26.48 (5 qt)
