Due to a long story I need a shift lever for an 2.6l Montero. Can anyone tell me what year Montero transfer cases did NOT have a Neutral position between 4L and 4H? My 86 had a neutral, and my assumption is that it would probably be an earlier 83-85...

I don't think you need a shift lever for the neutral. The detent is on the rail in the case. All the shifter does is move the forks, witch move the raile. General story is that the MT cases have the detent and the ATs don't.

Okay the long story.
I replaced the transmission with a used one (transmission and transfer) but kept my original transfer case. If you put a transfer case with a neutral on a transmission that had a transfer case without a neutral, you get a combination where if you shift into 4L while in reverse, the transmission will pop into neutral...

So I need a shift lever from a transfer case without a neutral because the one on the used one was broken in half.

So I just need to know if someone can tell me what year Montero didn't have a neutral, so I can get a shift lever for the used transfer case and install it...

This is strange. All past discussions that I can recall have been about ATs without and MTs with. These included talks about how the ATs do have the neutral point in the t-case, but no detent to keep the shifter there. Same discussions include comments on AT and MT cases being different. For one, the MT has the tranny shifter on it.

You are saying shift lever for the case. In a MT setup, the two shift levers are one assembly. Sounds like you have an AT?

We dont know if you have an auto, or a manual transmission first off.

Second... Only manual transmissions have transfer cases that have a "neutral" from the factory. Auto transmissions have a neutral spot, but there is no detent to keep it there. You can put a detent in that shifter rail, and make an auto trans transfer case have a neutral spot.

Sounds like youve got some other issues going on in there.

Auto, and manual transfer cases are not compatable.

Based on the above, it sounds like they all have a Neutral but some don't have the detent.

To get the detent if yours doesn't have it you either need to swap the rail/shifter from a manual case or use a tool to create a detent in your xcase shift rail since you have an automatic transmission.

Beyond that, you should include your vehicle details in your signature to help us give you the most accurate answers.

Probably all years with automatic transmissions since they did not have a neutral detent.
