Anyone mount yakima bike and ski mounts on the factory roof rack. If so, what did you need? I have a full rack that came off my honda accord, should I just but the Q-clips, or forget about the rack, and throw it in the back?

Body Damage is Cool
My '98 had the factory luggage rack. I removed the stock rack and added a Yakima to the stock rails using Yakima's "Rail Rider" towers (Rail Rider 1's, IIRC). Works great.

The problem there is I would need to buy a new set of towers and the special clips. I think that would cost approximately $150. I already have the Q-towers, and would only have to spend $48 for the clips. What I am wondering is should I just mount the bike and ski mounts directly on the factory rack. I am also looking at getting a MegaWarrior basket for the roof. Not sure what to do?

it depends on what type of bike mounts they are. if they are the fork mount style, then you have to use the yakima racks. if they are the upright style (front tire attached), then you should be able to use yakima mightmount (part # 24h, $30 for 2 pairs) to hold them. for you ski mounts, you only need their mightymount (part # 2v, $21 for 2 pairs) to attach them.

for more information, check the yakima website

personally, i would just use your rack and buy new clips - if you're on a budget. if not, get either the railriders or their new control tower and mount it to the factory rails. i personally like the look on the rear of the runner instead of it being in front - especially if you have a sun roof.

I bought my cross bars on eBay as well. You're right that retail is ~$160 for the set, but they can be had for a lot less if you can afford to be patient.

Yak, Yak, Yak, Yakima.

I've had it over 5 years, and it still looks new. One time I came home and forgot my bike was on the roof. I pulled into the garage and bang! The rack didn't move and there wasn't a mark on it. The bike ended up with some scratches though.

Btw, the faring is a MUST.

You're absolutely right about the fairing, Jason -- it makes a HUGE difference. I was amazed...

Thanks guys, the bike mounts that I have are the fork mount style, so I guess I'll need to buy new towers. I alreaady have a fairing, and I agree that I don't want to put the rack on the front. I am also thinking of buying a MegaWarrior basket, and I can mount the bike mounts directly to that. Anyway, thanks for the info!

Need a Spot
I placed my yakima rack on the back using the factory lugage rack (like a lot of people). I believe the only thing you'll need to purchase is railriders 2 (119.00) I use fork mount's for my bikes and don't have a problem. Just switch out your lock cores and place them on the railriders.
