I remember way back when, there were lots of threads on here about head gasket issues with the 3.0 V6.

Has anyone done the change? We are in the midst of doing our old 4Runner and I am wondering what should be changed and what is good to re-use.

I recall folks saying that the knock sensor, or at least th wiring harness to it was a good thing to change out as it is hard to get to and disturbing the wiring seems to cause troubles with it.

I am wondering about the head bolts. Are they ok to re-use or should we bite the bullet and get new ones?

Going to do the timing belt as it is time now anyway and I guess the water pump since it is easy to do now.

Is there anything else you would do while it is apart?

Randy

I would change:

Headgaskets
Head studs (they are NOT re-useable, they are TTY bolts)
knock sensor wire
valve cover gaskets
PCV valve
any other leaking seals / gaskets.

While you're in there, i would take out the fuel injectors and get them cleaned / flowed.
timing belt, idler bearings, water pump, thermostat
coolant

So how about the knock sensor itself? It is the expensive part. The harness is $14.

The head bolts and washers are separate. Any reason not to reuse the washers?

Knock Sensor - 89615-20010 Your call on replacement.

Use the washers. I'd use new bolts too.

I take it you found the TSB link in the Toyota Archive section for torquing the bolts.

I doubt you'd need to replace the sensors... it's the wire that cracks off when you try to undo it... i did not replace the sensors when i rebuilt my 3.4... just added a new wire...

Definitely use new head bolts, and have the heads checked/surfaced at a machine shop.

A new KS is up to you, if you have more time than money I would just swap the KS wire, and see what happens. The dealership recommends replacing the KS do to the the work that would have to be done again to get to the KS if it goes bad.

The FSM will walk you through the process step by step, it isn't a hard job, just time consuming.
