Just wondering as I have had my eye on a 88 4 cyl with a bad engine and always dream about diesels......maybe just a pipe dream but ya never know.

No, the early gen 1's had a 3 speed Chrysler torqueflite automatic. '87 on they had the Aisin KM148 4 speed, the interchangeable bellhousings meant they could be shared between 4 cyl and v6. '90 or so came the Aisin AW2 or KM148 lock up, this was the same as the previous transmissions but with a locking torque converter.
