Illegal. Its not taxed or regulated for use as vehicle fuel and its use comes with hefty fines.

EDIT: Never thought I'd reference Yahoo for anything.. but here:

EDIT AGAIN: Pretty sure I was thinking of agricultural/industrial diesel, not heating oil. Either way, they're not the same thing.

iam well aware of the fact its not taxed, for road use, it the same as off road diesel. hence it being dyed red. so they can easly tell if you are using it with a quick sample. then look and your odometer and say you have been running the for x number of miles then tax you for all those miles and throw a fine on top.
it was more of a random question, but then say you never drive on public roads.

Body Damage is Cool
I would wonder about the lubricity and cold weather additives missing from the heating fuel.

Other than that, I've never been checked for burning "purple" as they call it up here. (Not that I do.) But the dyed fuel is for Ag use and would have additives for engines as opposed to a heating fuel.

9/10 times when they deliver fuel weather its off-road diesel, fram gas, or # 2 home heating fuel it all comes from the same tank, cost to much to hold bulk in so many tanks
