I've searched and I haven't found anything. I'm new to monteros but not to offroading. My first question is I have a 1990 Montero LWB with coil springs and was wondering what rearend is in it and is it strong. My axle seals are leaking and was wondering if I should fix or try to find a Gen 2 SR. Im not going to be hard core offroading with this vehicle.

Welcome to your first post.
There is nothing wrong with the Gen I rear axle, you already own it. The seal is not too difficult to replace and is much less work than swapping in a Gen II axle. I won't go into the Gen II axle topic too much, because there are numerous threads documenting them. The benefits are a wider track, disc brakes and an air-locker (not like ARB).
I'd just replace the seal and wheel bearing, turn the drums, adjust your brakes and be done the same day.

Gen 1 v6 axle and ring gear are plenty strong and with a more powerful engine, the gen 2 SR is even bigger/stronger design. For the stock pose plant, the gen 1 rear drivetrain is plenty strong enough. Be sure to upgrade the trailing arms though.

Thanks guys. One more question. Can you tell me what the rearend is. It looks like a ford 9" but I know it's not.

Thanks guys. One more question. Can you tell me what the rearend is. It looks like a ford 9" but I know it's not. Nope it's not. From what we've been able to learn in over a decade of research is they're a Mitsubishi Gearset. No other vehicles use them. That said IIRC the Gen 1 v6 is at least ~8.5" ring gear while the 3.5l Montero's a have a 9.5" ring gear. HTH

it's a 9" MMC or KOYO , I'm not real sure on what plant the axle is built in, all I know is you can't break it or wear it out. Many came with LSD . Look for orange sticker in drivers door jam. The LSDs last forever, too. Ratio is 4.625,,,that info and more is on a tag near radiator.

I really appreciate it. Guess I'll be ordering some axles seals next week

Welcome to The Wire. Read the posting guidelines thread. My answer to your subject would be "Got an answer..." Seriously though, you want people to read your thread. A bad topic doesn't help your pursuit.
