So the Sportage has recently developed an odd problem.
It kicks off the pump at the gas station. A lot.

I can be at 1/4 tank, 1/2 tank, whatever and the attendant (against the law to pump your own in Oregon) has to stand there and hold the lever to keep it pumping.
Sometimes it even spits gas back out of the filler.
They will be like "I don't know, it's gotta be full, it started spewing back out of the filler."
I'll get in and start it up and only have half a tank.

It was only doing it maybe once a week. Now it's pretty much every time I get gas and no matter where I get it (I ruled out a overly sensitive pump handle, it's doing it at every pump now, at every station in town and away from home).

I also ruled out bad fuel gauge sending unit. Tonight the guy pumping was very determined and got about 7 gallons in when I was at about half tank on the gauge. When I got in it went to full.

Any ideas?

And I'd have to pull the code again to get the number. But when I hook my scanner up it's never DEQ test ready and I think it was always an EVAP code. Though it's not turning on the MIL (check engine light).

When I fill up, I can't put the nozzle all the way into the filler or it will do exactly what you are saying. I have to have it backed out just a little bit. I think that if the nozzle is pushed all the way in, the angle that the gas comes out at makes some kick back up and shut off the pump. If I leave it just a little bit out, I don't have the issue.

It's strange that this is a recent issue for you, though. There's a damper in the tank where the filler hose attaches that's meant to keep the gas from rushing out in the event that you flip your truck. Maybe yours is getting stuck and backing the gas up.

Hmmm.. I'll try to get the message across to the attendants to try not shoving it in all the way.
I wish we could pump our own gas here.......

Good info in the damper. I'll see if there is a way to check that out through the pump access hatch or something.

Body Damage is Cool
It is in the rubber fill hose very close to the neck coming off the tank. I had to remove mine when I replaced my filler hose. Access is through the wheel well.

Finally getting a chance to dig into this. So I got a chance to hook up the scanner. No codes.
Got gas yesterday for a snow run and it seemed to work out fine for them. They just filled it slow. I also explained what was going on. So I'll probably keep hitting that station if I can until it's figured out.

Might check that rubber hose and the damper just before the tank. It's just freakin' cold and damp out. One of those rare not raining days around here, but your hands stiffen up after a few minutes a healing sprained finger is not helping my desire to dig around under there... And checking all other hoses in the EVAP system just to be sure. Connection to the solenoid under the hood looks good and clean (but that's not to say it's not having issues still, the connection is just good.).

I should head over to Washington where you CAN pump your own gas and fill it up. then I can get a better feel for exactly how it's acting up first hand.

So an update. MIL finally came on "P0440 generic EVAP malfunction".

I've cleared that and dug into the stuff under the back.
Took the EVAP canister and filter off.
the plastic tub it all sits in was filled with mud. the filter inlet was packed with it.
Cleaned all that out and pulled one layer of felt filter out that was caked (Read about it somewhere else on here to get me by for now).
Now there is air flow through the filter. Everything else looks good.
I'll try getting gas in the morning and go wheeling out at TSF.

Going to order up a new filter or look at other filtering options (like an aftermarket cleanable breather, get two and just keep swapping them out regularly).
Also I'm going to relocate the filter. Not sure where, but a length of hose and clever spot should keep it from getting so mucked up.
That really is a bad spot for it if you plan on any mud....

I noticed earlier Sportages had it all under the hood. That was a better spot other than making it more cramped under there.

I just got the P0440 code a few days ago. But my Sporty has been sitting in the driveway for a long time, either being worked on or neglected because my wife just recently gave birth to our first child (a boy... still trying to figure out how to mount the kid's car seat on the cargo rack over the spare tire... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />). On a whim, I threw a bottle of Lucas Fuel System Treatment in with a fresh tank of gas. Haven't had any problems for 80 miles of driving. And it seems to be running a bit smoother. I suspect my problem was just caused by the fuel getting a bit stale and everything settling in the system. That said, it's good to know about cleaning up the canister. I'll have to pull mine soon and give it a good inspection and cleaning, if needed. Thanks for the update! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

That Lucas stuff always seems to work pretty good for me as well. I bought one of the big bottles once and used it on a trip in another vehicle. My MPG went up a decent amount.
And Seafoam has always been a good one for me as well.
