Need a Spot
Hi Everyone,

Was wondering if anyone can help me diagnose an issue I am having. I have a 97 Montero with 180k miles on it. Recently (past 2 months) the Battery, Brake, and A/T lights have been blinking intermittenly on my dashboard. The car starts and runs perfectly fine and has been driven regularly the past 2 months that this has been going on. I had the battery and alternator tested and they come out good.

At this point, I am out of ideas as to what it can possibly be so any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Man I don't know maybe a bad ground some where I would make sure the motor and ecu are grounded well.

Those symptoms are generally an indicator of the alternator not charging. In addition to checking your grounds, check your battery cables for corrosion and good connections at both the battery and alternator. You might also check your alternator belt for condition and proper tension, an intermittently slipping belt could cause your symptoms. The problem could also be in the alternator itself - an intermittent short or some other weird internal problem. That would be hard to diagnose unless you can catch it while it's happening.

I have checked my battery cables and they were all replaced as originally I thought that they were the culprit. I will check the belt to see if its slipping or not. I dont mind replacing the alternator, just want to avoid the cost in the event its not the problem.

Also have your battery and alternator tested. Even new they can be bad.

Intermittent short in the alternator, probably. Have it tested asap. A shorted alternator can fry lots of stuff.

According to my local Firestone, its not the alternator, the battery, or the battery cables.

I would guess it's the.... ALternator. When it has a bad Diode. The will put out a charge, but not enough. They need to test alternator again- Needs to be putting out around 14 volts. If your local Auto store tests it and see 12-13. If you turn lights/AC etc the volts will drop. Test it again with stuff pulling juice...
