I want to tow my Grasscat instead of selling it if I can. I prefer to pull four down like the Gen 1's after finding the sweet spot in the transfer case but I've not been able to find that spot on the Gen 2. So I'm looking for others ways, but don't want to trailer it. I came across this article. Does not make any sence to me, maybe someone can shed some light on this statement. "If your Montero is four-wheel drive, ensure that the shifter in the car is engaged in the "2WD LO" gear, which will place the rear wheels in neutral and lock the front, drive wheels. Do not engage the parking brake or use any other gear. Read more: How to Tow a Montero on a Tow Dolly | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/how_7516138_tow-montero-tow-dolly.html#ixzz2Lk9k8biL

Towing with an "A" frame or Tow bar A Gen 2 is a hard thing to flat tow, because they are so heavy and you have to be careful what you attach to. I'd go direct to your frame unless your ARB bumper is bolted through the frame then you can tow from that if you're willing to drill through it. Disconnect your rear drive shaft and secure it with the slip yoke fully engaged, make sure your hubs are unlocked and the rear drive shaft is tied up so that it can't slip out.
Use the same method for towing with a tow dolly if you can find one rated for the Montero's weight.
For everyone else, never tow a gen 2 from the factory bumper or attached to the upper bumper mounts (the things welded to the top of the frame horns) the truck will separate from the tow frame.
Hope this helps

It really doesn't take much to tow a gen 2(.5)
I was able to get one of the SUV rated trailers at uhaul (had to fib a little to the sales guy), and pulled a gen 2.5 550 miles (mostly flat, no mountains) using a 2000 Silverado 1500 (2x4, regular bed).
We did some before and after measurements, and the back of the truck only went down 1/2 of an inch with the montero loaded up. Front of the truck only went up 1/4 of an inch.
We were able to move along quite easily at 65-70 mph. Mpg was crap (10-11)
not sure where you're moving to, but you could also probably find someone near by to your new location. Drive the montero out, fly back... do the rest of your moving... Or get a buddy to drive it out to your new place, and fly him back.... bonus there is that you have someone to help you unpack!

if i had to do it;
install manual locking front hubs if you dont already have them, unlock them, obviously.
unbolt rear driveshaft, use safety wire to mount to underbody of truck and leave the front half in the transmission, or remove entirely and put a bag over the output of the transfercase and zip tie in place.
all of this will reduce drivetrain drag and prevent the transmission from having parts turning/wearing while towing.
once where you're going it's just 4 bolts to re-install the driveshaft and you're off.

I can shed some. The author is full of sh*t. You want the rear driveshaft out, or at least disco'd from them rear diff. You want the steering wheel unlocked. The only thing tricky about tow dollying is that you CAN NOT back up

OK Let me state this another way. I know all about how to tow a Gen 2 Montero using a trailer, a tow dolly, with the drive shaft disconnected or with it's own tow bar and drive shaft disconnected, but thanks for the information anyway. What I want to know is has anyone found the neutral spot in the Gen 2 transfer case like on the Gen 1? I can shed some. The author is full of sh*t. I agree Eddy.
