Hi I just replaced my water pump on my 3.0 24 valve motor. I lined up the cam timing points with the mark on balancer showing T on gauge attached to main bracket. Put everything back together and no start. Tore everything back apart and found the timing mark on crank shaft timing plate (the one behind crank pully ) was off mark that all manuals show as timing mark. So now I take belt off and move crank to match timing mark with one on block. Now when I put balancer back on the mark on balancer is now off to the right about an inch or so on gauge that has T on it. Next question is on this motor what cylinder is the TDC cylinder. Thank you for any help

tdc on #1, on the dside front cylinder if I remember correctly.

On the balancer, one of two things may be wrong. One, the rubber bond may be broken and the outer hub may have slipped, and the balancer needs to be replaced. Two, the balancer may have been replaced with the wrong one, with the marks off.

The most likely is a slipped hub...

Also, it's possible to have it timed 180* out, since the crank makes two revolutions per power cycle, and you are at tdc on #4 instead of #1 (firing order is 123456, odd on one bank, even on the other). Pull the plugs for 1 and 4, and as you turn the crank toward tdc, see which cylinder is on the compression stroke by putting a finger over the plug hole.

Ok thx I was just outside looking at things and my roll pin is sitting off to the right quite a bit. In everything I have seen the roll pin should be in line with timing plate behind sprocket . I guess I am going to have to pull plugs and see what the heck is going on thx for your input.

On the 3.0L, 12v, SOHC engines, #1 is front/passenger side. Is it different on the other V engines?

Ok here is an update on my situation. The crank sprocket that turns timing belt and the thin metal plate slipped and the steel ring/ spacer is broken the three pieces. Ok dealer can order all three parts. And hope all goes well after that. By what I can tell it looks like who ever had truck before had the number 4 coil wire on number One piston on so on. I am guessing motor was 180* off. So now if I set my cam sprocket timing marks and my crank with new parts and line up marks on block I should be able to set wires back to normal right. Or would there be something in valve train that was done backwards that would prevent me from going back to normal firing order. Can I pull valve covers and see if valve are open or closed on number one cylinder at TDC?

I found a friends tractor to be 180 off. Ran fine but hell to line up timing marks. I switched it back.

You should be able to use compression of cylinder to determine if TDC then see where timing marks are.

How do you find the compression on 24V V6? Meaning, you can't get to the plugs.

A trick I picked up on doing the belt is this:

1. Line up the marks before pulling the old belt.
2. Make marks on the belt to match the timing marks.
3. Then with the belt pulled, make matching marks on the new belt.
4. Install so they all match.

I used this on my first one and it helped me feel better about the install. After a few, I just line up the marks first, then go slow taking the old off and putting the new on, thus making sure nothing moves.

The other key trick for the install is to turn the crank backwards 1/2 a tooth. This will make it easy to get the belt onto the crank gear teeth. Once on, turn it forward to tighten up the D side and finish feeding around the tensioners. And don't forget the pretension on the hydraulic of course.
