I'm working on a friends 89 raider and the timing sprocket is stuck on the crank nose. Shortblock is out and on the stand so we can get to it well. We've done the usual propane torch and 180deg apart wiggle with heat and light brass hammer blows until the seal started to smoke a bit. Searching for stuck sprocket showed some 6g72 car engines with tapped holes in the sprocket where we have none.. I'm trying to avoid tearing up the oilpump by prying and there isn't a lot of anything else to pry against. Someone know a trick before i fab a punching pattern to tap the face of this sprocket or just groove it and chisle split it? Thanks guys ! Mike

I am not an expert, but I have taken a few off. One I ended up essentially breaking the sprocket. It will crumble pretty easy. I think I used a thin piece of steel behind a pry bar. Make sure you replace the crank seal when done. Luckily I had taken one off a junk car before I did this. There may be some sort off puller assembly that you could rent at a parts store.

I used a paint stir stick to put my flat head against so I could gently pry. I ruined a pump housing AND a timing sprocket because of frustration before. If you use a brass hammer and gentle pressure you can slowly work if off

it's real easy to mess up and scratch crankshaft ,so careful. Prying on the ger from behind will often snap the lip off the gear,,,nd damage oil pomp at same time. I don't think a gear puller will work without damaging that gears lip either. The FSM says to drill nd tap to use puller. It's the same T gear s on Chryslers

AAhhhhHHaaaH I got the feeling that was the route I would be taking, did the FSM mention reuse old one or replacement with new sprocket? Thx Dav !

the sprocket is powdered metal, so drill it and split it to take it off. I drilled a hole in the front face and drove in a tapered punch until it split. not very expensive.
