Gen 2 rear door - "door open" light is on, but it seems like it's secure? (I searched...help!) #1058423 04/03/13 02:01 AM

Hey gang,

All of a sudden, the red "door open" light on the cluster is stuck on 24/7 and the rear dome light is on...the truck seems to think that the rear door is not closed all the way, but it's latched and opens with the usual "pop" of the latch.

I was previously able to mess with the rear dome light switch and the light would go off, but it kept coming back on by itself so I popped the bulb out for now, not wanting to run my battery down overnight. BUT, the red "door open" light on the cluster is still illuminated 24/7.

Does the striker need to be adjusted? Is there a "button" that gets depressed to signal that the rear door is all the say closed? If so, I didn't see it in the rear door frame (I know in most cars, it's at the bottom of the A pillar as far as the front doors go).

I noticed after the door is closed, I can press into it with some weight and it will still push in a little bit - the other 4 doors don't do this, so maybe it does need to be adjusted. But it's latched securely, so it's hard to say for sure.

Anyone have any pointers here? That "door open" light is super annoying! I should add...the locks and latches all work fine. Thanks in advance!

The cargo compartment lamp switch is in the cargo door latch assembly. If you can push the door further closed after it's latched then the striker needs to be adjusted to hold the door more tightly closed.

Does pushing the door further closed after it's latched turn off your cargo lamp? If it does then you'll fix your problem with a simple adjustment, if not then you'll probably need to replace the cargo door latch assembly.

It could also be a faulty switch.

For one, you can just turn the cargo light off, don't have to pull the bulb...

The switch seems to be rigged to the catch in the door itself. Just closed mine with the door open and the light went off. Guess you're going to have to get inside it.

My dome light feels screwed up on the inside...I had switched it to the "off" position about half a dozen times, verified it was off (at night) before walking back in the house...come out in the morning, the rear light is on again.

Looks like I might have to take it apart, but I'll try to adjust the striker first. Thanks all!

Dome lights are pretty simple designs, about the only way they fail is dirty bulb contacts or melting from being left on for far too long. If you've had problems with the dome lamp before then you should be pulling that apart first to check it for any obvious issues before you disassemble the door latch.
