Hey all I have a question Im sure some of you will know the answer. I have a 2000 2wd 4dr Sportage w/Auto with a crack on the block running horizontally below the freeze plugs on the driver side. I found a wrecked 1997 4wd 4dr Sportage w/Manual that still runs and basically drives but some frame damage. What differences are there between the 1997 and 2000 engines? Are there any differences with the engines between the autos and manuals?
The other thing Im looking to do down the road, is transfer the 4wd bits minus the lights in the dash and auto hubs to my 2wd. I know what all is involved for auto to auto, what I dont know is will the transfer case from the manual transmission bolt onto the auto? Are the bolt patterns and output the same?
If anyone can help with either or both issues I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm not sure of everything involved. I think most of the differences are in the electronics - sensors, harness and ECU. I think the blocks and internals are the same for all 1st gen DOHC engines. The major changes occurred in 1998. Being that you are looking at a 1997, you will need to swap out some of the bolt on parts to keep everything compatible with your current ECU. But I think that is do-able. The manual trans requires a different ECU, as will the 4x4 parts. And there's a lot to do for that job. That said, I'd say you're better off finding a working 4x4 version and invest your time and $$$ in some lift, rims and tires if you want to go that route. You will bleed time, $$$ and sanity if you try to convert a 2wd with a bad block into a working 4x4. This has been discussed here before, if you want to search for the thread to get an idea of what's really involved.
1997 Sportage 4x4, auto-trans, Warn manual hubs, 4" UPYOURKIA front lift, TJ 106AA rear springs, 2-5/8" body lift, 31x10.50 treads, SmittyBilt SRC front and XRC rear bumper, swing-out tire mount, OBX LSD front diff, Track Finder rear locker, 5.38 R&Ps and... really crappy gas mileage!

Thanks! Any idea of who the poster was? Ive gone back through quite aways and it seemed as long as went with manual hubs and didnt care about not having the 4wd light on the dash it was bolt on. Im not doubting you, its just all I have found so far. Regardless of the 4x4 issues, I still need to swap the engine, if for nothing else but to be able to sell the one I have.
So from your post. I can use the long block (head and block) but should keep my intake and intake manifold? What about the exhaust manifold? Do you know if they are the same? Mine is cracked in several places and its not worth the hassle to try and weld.
Please forgive the questions I dont have the 97 parts truck yet so I cant compare everything side by side.
As far as the lift, tires and rims I already have all that. I got the TJ springs from a friend, fabricated a set of front spacers for the top of the struts, a drop mount for the panhard, new rear shock mounts, and had the rims and 30x 9.5r15 tires. The fab and mechanical work is the easy part I have a 2 post lift, welders, plasma cutter, and two full snap on tool boxes. Its the lack of familiarity with what year Sportages are compatible. I have no idea what years are the same and what years things changed.

Here's a link to the trans swap thread... I think this may give you an idea of what may be involved and why it might be a major pain to convert a 2wd to 4x4, as well as converting manual to auto, or vice-versa. As for the long block compatibility, I'd say take a look on one of the online KIA parts sellers (factory/OEM). You can cross-ref the long block for the model years listed to see if the part numbers are the same. You can also check eBay for compatibility on the motors being sold there. Those are a few avenues that may help clear things up. Hope that helps...

You could use the 97 exhaust manifold but you will need to put an O2 sensor before and after the main cat. It may not be legal and will not pass a smog visual inspection. The wiring for the switches off the transfer case may be there on your 2wd. The 2wd transmission may not work with the transfer case. You might need to get both transfer case and transmission. Are there any differences with the engines between the autos and manuals? AFAIK none and none are the answers on both questions. And I dont mean the electronics...
Thanks. There is a roumor that the gearboxes 2wd and 4wd are the same. Only difference is that the transfer of the 4wd is a simple "spacer-like" on the 2wd since according to the same rumor the rear drive axle is also of the same length. For sure since you will have both side by side every comparison would be easier. I belive that at the end of the day the easier way you could end ur is the 97iron with your cullent electronics managment-wise, and either go manual with possible adaptations for the auto-ECU, or fit ( that i belive it does fit eventhow I havent ever seen a 2wd ) the thransfer ant the tail of your autostrans plus ofcurse everything else required to make it a 4wd...
